What does ‘quality’ teacher mean?

12 Sep

In this post (read), Mike Rose questions what makes a “quality” teacher and challenges the widespread belief that elite institutions with selective teacher education programs are the only means for producing quality educators. I have mixed feelings: obviously, there are plenty of smart people who make terrible teachers and plenty of people who went to so-so institutions who turn out to be amazing. If I were to make a list of characteristics of quality teachers, here’s where I’d start:

Quality teachers

  • like young people, and young people like them.
  • enjoy teaching and are excited about the subjects they teach.
  • are readers.
  • are writers.
  • are learners.
  • are willing collaborators.
  • are optimists.

Are there any qualities here that you would remove? What else would you add?
